Common I-40 truck breakdowns and who fixes them

What the dash is telling you, what to do at the shoulder, and which filter to tap on your city page to find the right shop fast. None of this replaces a mechanic; it gets you to the right one.

Semi truck won't regen, DPF full, or parked regen won't start

A regen that keeps aborting usually means an inhibit condition (parking brake not set, PTO on, low fuel, hood or door switch), a plugged or cracked DPF, a bad differential-pressure or exhaust-temp sensor, or too many short trips at low exhaust temperature. Once the soot-level warning turns to a derate countdown, more driving will not fix it. Look for: Engine plus Comes to you. A mobile diesel tech with OEM software (DiagnosticLink, Cummins INSITE, PACCAR Davie, Volvo PTT) can run a forced regen roadside or tell you the filter has to come off for cleaning.

DEF derate, "5 mph derate", or DEF quality / SCR fault

Freightliner Cascadia (Detroit DD15), Kenworth and Peterbilt (PACCAR MX), Volvo D13, International A26 and Cummins X15 all derate on the same family of faults: contaminated or crystallized DEF, a failed DEF quality or NOx sensor, a dosing pump or heater, or a DEF tank that ran dry. Top off only with fresh DEF from a sealed jug, never water or anything else, and do not keep driving through the countdown. The fault has to be cleared with dealer-level software after the repair, so pick a shop that has it. Look for: a brand dealer for warranty work, or Engine + Comes to you for a mobile tech who can diagnose and clear codes at the truck stop.

Air leak, low air pressure, or brakes won't release

Listen for the hiss: glad hands and trailer lines, a brake chamber diaphragm, a stuck air-dryer purge valve, or a tired compressor are the usual culprits. If the low-air buzzer is on, stay put; below 60 psi the spring brakes will set on their own. Look for: Brakes + Comes to you. Most roadside mechanics carry line, fittings and chambers.

Blown steer or drive tire on the interstate

Get well off the shoulder, triangles out, and call for a tire truck rather than limping on a shredded casing. Truck-stop shops (TA Truck Service, Speedco) and mobile tire services run 24/7 on most of the corridor. Look for: Tire + Open 24/7.

Truck won't start, dead batteries, alternator, or no crank

A slow crank at a fuel island is normally batteries or cables; a truck that dies while driving is more often the alternator or a fuel-supply problem. In winter, between Flagstaff and Albuquerque and again through the Tennessee and Carolina mountains, gelled diesel does the same thing; carry anti-gel and a spare fuel filter. Look for: Electrical + Comes to you for a jump start, batteries or an alternator swap on the spot.

Overheating, coolant leak, or fan clutch

Coolant temperature climbing on the long grades west of Kingman, up to Flagstaff, or through the Pigeon River gorge means shut it down before the engine protection does. Hoses, EGR cooler, radiator, water pump and fan clutch are the common failures. Look for: Engine and, if you cannot move, Comes to you.

Reefer unit down (Thermo King, Carrier)

A reefer that stops holding temperature is a load claim waiting to happen. Check fuel first, then call a reefer specialist; only some diesel shops touch refrigeration. Look for: Reefer, or the Carrier Transicold dealers below.

Trailer problems: lights, air bags, landing gear, DOT inspection defects

Trailer lighting, ABS faults, blown air bags, mud flaps and landing gear are the things that get you written up at a scale house. Look for: Trailer; many shops on the list do mobile trailer repair at truck stops and shipper yards.

RV and motorhome breakdowns

Slide-outs that will not retract, a generator that will not stay running, house batteries, leveling jacks and awnings are RV-shop work; a diesel-pusher chassis (Cummins ISB / ISL, Freightliner chassis) can go to the same dealers and mobile diesel techs as a truck. Look for: RV service, or the Camping World and Blue Compass service centers below.
